Avvo is an application that rates doctors and lawyers, assists users with finding doctors and lawyers, and provides free answers from doctors and lawyers.
Avvo was cofounded by Mark Britton and Sendi Widjaja in 2006. Britton had discovered how difficult it was to find information about professionals that wasn’t related to individual advertising. He wanted to find a way for consumers to find medical and legal professionals based on ratings rather than advertisements.
Avvo allows users to see ratings of doctors and lawyers based on patient reviews, background information, education, history, and any information about disciplinary issues. This makes it a unique tool for rating and reviewing doctors and lawyers – much more useful than basing a decision on a paid advertising campaign.
Users may rate doctors or lawyers with both a star-based system as well as a narrative. Reviews are not immediately published, presumably so that they may be checked for appropriate content before posting.
Questions may be posted with a general question and then additional details. Answers are posted as they are received and may take several days.
Users may search the site for answers to question similar to their own. Results may feature health or legal guides written by qualified Avvo staff, or questions and answers from other users and professionals.
Professionals can claim their profiles to see patient ratings and to add to their profile information.
Registration requires a first name, email address, and password, along with newsletter preferences. An email with confirmation link is sent immediately.
Avvo is free to use.
This is an application that many people would find very useful when seeking the professional services of a doctor or lawyer.
